Session Title : Artificial Intelligence (AI) Oceanography

Session Description: AI (artificial intelligence) techniques, although several decades old, have experienced a resurgence following huge progress in information and computer technology (ICT), availability of a larger amounts of reliable data, and a better theoretical understanding of various phenomena. AI has become a central part of the technology industry, helping to solve many scientific challenges in various fields of research, and oceanography is not an exception. Although the application of AI in oceanography is relatively new, AI oceanography has shown broad prospects for development. The necessity for the application of AI in oceanography relates to the need to boost scientific understanding of the ocean and for sustainable marine development. Integrating natural science and information has allowed us to enter a new era of “smart ocean”. Nowadays, AI oceanography ranges from microscopic robots used to mimic phytoplankton, passing through the application of AI in marine energy harnessing as renewable energy source, to the use of AI technologies to detect oceanic eddies or other systems from images of sea surface temperature, sea surface height or chlorophyll.

Moreover, with the improvement in marine numerical modeling (higher resolution, current-wave-wind interaction, multiple-level nesting and so on) and observation, an enormous amount of storage space is required to store all this data, known as big data. The data is so huge that classical methods can no longer cope when it comes to the processing of such data. With such a huge data volume, deep learning tech is also possible to be used in oceanography.

AI technology is still far from being ideal; major advances are imperative. If AI can be successfully applied to oceanography, it will certainly accelerate the development of oceanography.

This session welcomes abstracts on all aspects of application of AI in oceanography.
